Product DescriptionThe Evoluent VerticalMouse 3 is the advanced third generation of the revolutionary mouse from the inventor of the handshake grip. Many users said earlier models relieved their wrist and arm pain.Product Features* Reshaped to better fit a greater range of hand sizes* A gaming grade infrared sensor with hardware adjustable resolution of 800-2600 dpi instead of an optical sensor with fixed 1200 dpi resolution * An optical scroll wheel with detents (clicks) instead of a smooth rolling wheel * A small flange along the bottom edge to prevent the little finger from dragging on the desk * Additional driver functions, such as button programming customizable for different applications Customer ReviewsRated The only thing that takes a little getting used to is this: Because klicking a button is done by horizontal force (instead of vertical with a traditional mouse), inadvertently sometimes the mouse is moved when trying to click so as to miss the target. But that's acceptable in light of the comfi ergonomics. Rated I'm a software developer so I spend a lot of time in front of a computer. I bought thsi mouse because I have been having pain in my wrist, hand and fingers on my mousing hand. The mouse almost immediately fixed the wrist pain because I no longer move my wrist side to side. It has helped the hand pain somewhat, but my fingers still bother me. I guess it's from the clicking. Good product anyway, just dont expect it to be a magical solution. Rated After experiencing pain in the palm of my hand and index finger and shoulder from using a typical mouse 8 hours a day for years in my job as a TV editor using Avid and FCP I started looking for alternatives. I searched google and read many reviews of Ergonomic mice. I tried the Wow Joy Pen but found it wasn't vertical, I still had to hold my hand at an uncomfortable 45 degree angle. I returned it. I was hesitant to try the Evoluent despite great reviews due to the fact I work on a Mac and the Evoluent is designed primarily for Windows PC's. In emails to the Evoluent people they couldn't assure me that their product would work with Mac Tiger OS 10.4.11. After being disappointed in the Wow Joy Pen I hesitated but finally decided to purchase the Evoluent knowing if I didn't like it or it didn't work I could return it. After using the product for about a month I can say that it DOES work with a Mac, at least the right (middle button) and left (top button) click and scroll. That is all I really use anyway. All I had to do was plug it into my USB keyboard slot and go. No additional software was needed. It has greatly reduced the stress in my hand, especially the index finger, which was always tense and poised above the left click button of a regular mouse. It also relieves the stress of having to twist your arm to use the normal flat mouse. It doesn't take long to get used to using it. I would recommend it to everyone, in fact, I am thinking of buying another one for home use as I can tell when I use my regular flat mouse at home the stress starts again even though I am not using it 8 hours a day at home. Rated The Evoluent mouse is unique to say the least. Which is why I say it takes some time getting used to. Upon first use, my mouse arrow was all over the place and I was clicking mouse buttons when I did not want to. Well, two weeks later and I got most of it under control. Retraining your hand takes time. With that said, it really does help the hand slightly holding the mouse this way. Is it that much better? Only time will tell but so far it feels better. The Evoluent mouse has a DPI button on the bottom to change the resolution to help with the control you can handle. That is a great plus. The downside is that I found it by looking at the mouse as there was nothing mentioned in the documentation. In fact, I am glad I found that because until I reduced the DPI, I had a lot of trouble controlling the mouse. The cons for me are fairly troublesome. First, there are no drivers for Windows 7 available yet and there are no drivers for any OS that is 64 bit. The Evoluent website states "maybe quarter 1 2010". A maybe does not cut it. The mouse works with standard buttons which is fine, but without drivers, you cannot remap the buttons, so you end up with a mouse that you better hope is setup how you would like it out of the box. I really need to remap my buttons. Which brings me to the second con. The back button is the bottom most button for your hand. It is a great challenge at times to not accidentally click that when you go to move the mouse to the left. There is a perfect button to use for that located at the thumb, but with no drivers, that button does nothing. The last con is that there is a level of cheapness to how it feels. I think they are close to a good idea with this mouse, but many are moving to a 64 bit OS, so without drivers, I would not attempt this mouse yet. Rated This vertical mouse is helpful, but awkward. It is huge, and of course, you don't have a lot of room on the surface of your laptop; so you have to keep readjusting its position to keep it from getting stuck on the keyboard and other surface obstacles. Also, it's impossible to type while it's on the surface, so you have to remove it each time you want to type something, which is a pain. If you're not going to be typing but just pointing and clicking, it's fine. It does relieve a lot of the pressure of the built-in mouse; but you would think that knowing it's for a laptop, they would have figured out a way to make it smaller - about half the size would be perfect.
